LIMOUSIN

History Of The Limousin Breed

Limousin originated in the high, rocky Aquitaine region of France.  For centuries the area was isolated from the rest of Europe by political strife.  As a result Limousin cattle have long been range animals, bred and selected for outstanding meat qualities and have adapted to survive in harsh conditions.

The Limousin movement in Canada began in 1968 with the first imports from France.  The popularity of the breed spread quickly when performance testing in Canada proved their worth to the industry.  Many more importations followed as well as an extensive grading up program.  The early years of testing through extensive government programs reinforced the impressive breed traits.  They proved to have high fertility and the most efficient production record of all the French breeds.  An easy calving record with the smallest birth weight of all the continental breeds, was one of the traits readily accepted as well as outstanding mothering ability and good milk production.

History Of Our Limousin Herd

Ken bought his first Limousin cow in 1986 from Big Rock Limousin Ranch, followed by purchases of cows from Ivy's - Ben Plummer.  He started selling bulls in 1992.  The cow herd has been greatly influenced by many AI bulls: Guardian, Keystone, Black Powder, R & R Choice, Rambler.

We don't currently show the Limousins, but still sell about 20 bulls a year by private treaty.

We’ve have many successes in the breed selling cows to Russia, high selling polled fullblood bull, and have had visitors from overseas.

Currently our two herdsires represent what we feel are great attributes to both the red and black in the Limousin breed.  We purchased Ivy's Polled Lawman (black) at the Pacesetter Sale at Farmfair in 2001.   He was named Reserve Grand Champion Bull and is still proudly doing his job.  RPY Payne’s Sharp (red) was purchased at Farmfair in 2006.  He was named Division Champion at both Farmfair and Agribition.   With these two herdsires temperament, scrotal and thickness are factors we are striving for.
